As of right now, 10 miners are above ground! Still 23 to go at this time.
The 33 miners have been trapped unerground since August 5th. That's 69 days. When the 700,000 tons of rocks collapsed, the men spent 17 days with no contact from above ground. They made 48 hours' worth of rations last before rescuers were able to send more food to them.
The first few men to come out were in the best medical condition. The next 10 to be rescued will need medical attention due to hypertension, diabetes and skin ulcers.
Panic attacks during the rescue are a big concern. They have given the miners a high calorie liquid diet designed by NASA to combat nausea. The miners will have to be alert during their ascent in case something goes wrong. A video camera will monitor the ascents to watch for panic attacks and a 2-way comminucation system is in place as well. To prevent blood clotting, the miners were also given aspirin to think their blood and are wearing compresion socks. They will also need to wear sunglasses for awhile to protect their eyes from the natural light.
The regional hospital has prepped 2 floors for care of the miners, that will be lit just like a movie theatre to accomodate them. They will be receiving physical as well as psycholigical care. Their ordeal is not over.
These men are not only brave, but they are victims. Sure, they are also heros, but what happened to them shouldn't have. I'm happy that the Chilean government is doing everything in it's power to help these men and their families to go through something like this.
Today, I will be praying for them, as well as sending them positive energy and luck. May God bless them all.
